I have been enjoying visiting blogs and decided to start my own, even though I don't know what I am doing or if anyone will even be interested in reading what I have to say. I am a 50 year old management consultant who has been married to the the love of my life for 30 years and have two grown daughters and a son-in-law who we are very proud of. We are blessed to live in Scottsdale Arizona and are enjoying getting out and experiencing it in our RV! Thanks for stopping by our blog and please consider joining us, who knows where we will go...Kevin & Tracy.

Retirement in 15 years?

This post is not meant to be political or to create controversy....this is just a question that keeps rolling around in my head.  What will retirement look like for us in 15, 20, 25 years and will it even be a possibility?

I read all these great RV blogs about the wonderful adventures that many of you have undertaken and I can't help but be a little envious of what might never be for us.

With the stock market downturn, gas at $5.00 per gallon and the unknown future that lies ahead, I wonder if people who are 50 today will ever be able to actually retire?

I wonder if we will just continue to work until we can't work anymore? I wonder if we will just work until the time we have to move in with our kids (I hope they read this post and make sure to prepare our room...you know, a nice large one, preferably with an ocean view). Or will we just pack up our motorhome and drive off into the sunset, paying $27.00 per gallon for gas and $75.00 per night to boondock at WalMart?

Well no one knows, so we will just keep enjoying life based on what we know today and putting as much as we can away for the future and just hope for the best!

I do hope your week has been great and that your Easter weekend will be blessed!

  1. If it's any consolation, you are miles ahead of most folks in that you know what you want your retirement to look like and you have a plan to get there financially. We are admittedly in a scary time, but I think our country is pretty resilient, and hopefully we will correct the glaring mistake of an ill-informed electorate in November.

  2. Two of the best pieces of wisdom I ever received:

    1. People is people

    2. You do what you gotta do

Now that I'm retired, can't say that I've learned much to top those.

  3. At least you have a plan unlike most people I know that age. Keep the dream alive!

  4. I agree -- none of us know what tomorrow will bring. We just have to do the best we can and let God do the rest! Don't give up the dream.

  5. You ask what my wife and I have been asking each other for the past year. We finally got serious about getting rid of debt and trying to plan for retirement but we're hoping we weren't too late. Social Security can't be depended on and our little bit of investment was wiped out by the market so we are basically starting over.

I hope your plan goes well and when it's your time to retire everything works out.

    Safe travels,

    Erik

    1. Erik - Thanks for connecting with us and getting rid of debt and not borrowing money has been the key for us. We have been following Dave Ramsey's principles and it has made a huge difference for us. If we have any hope of future retirement, it will be by following this process. Have a great weekend!

  6. You are taking time now to enjoy camping and other activities. You may not want to go full time when you retire, so grab what you can when you can.

We just retired and it is scary. Will we have enough money when we wre in our 80's? Maybe we will be dead.

  7. Thanks for all of the comments...it is a little scary but we have full faith that we will make it through just fine...even if the room in our kid's house doesn't have an ocean view!
